It’s been awhile since the last time I visited Singapore for DFW. I’m starting to miss Singapore, especially their food! The last time I was there, I went crazy on the food because everything is so yummy! I’m pretty sure all my Singaporean readers or those who’ve visited Singapore before, know what I’m talking about. I think I should plan a food trip to Singapore real soon.
Amidst the expensive and luxurious food available in Singapore, I look forward most to enjoying the local dishes with a heritage influenced by Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and Indonesian culture. The best thing about living in a multicultural country, as I also do, is that you get to enjoy food with its own twists in flavor and heritage. I believe every dish has its own story to tell – some are from recipes passed down multiple generations.
You really need to visit Singapore yourself to know what I mean.
Since we’re in the topic of food, I’d like to share with you guys my Top 15 favourite food items from Singapore that I’m obsessed with and don’t mind queuing up just to have:
1) Char Kway Teow
2) Hokkien Mee
3) Chicken rice (This dish of Hainanese origin is probably the most famous and popular hawker dish in Singapore, am I right?)
4) Crab (Not just chilli crab, but also the Tasmanian King Crab, Dungeness Crab, Blue Swimmer, and Alaskan King Crab. You can pick any of these and request that they be cooked in 10 different styles)
5) Bak Kut Teh
6) Fish Head Curry
8) Kopi and Kaya Toast
9) Oyster Omelette
11) Carrot Cake ( Chai Tow Kuay)
12) Sambal Stingray
13) Economy rice
14) Yong Tau Foo
15) Nasi Padang
Notice how all of them are simple, yet sinfully good food? One thing on which I can totally relate to Singapore is their takeaway culture. We Malaysians go nuts when we see all the food at the night market or at the street stalls, and when we can’t decide what to eat, we’d tapao everything haha. Almost all stalls will do a takeaway order, complete with packaging, plastic utensils, and packets of sauces. And this is what I do when I’m staying over at my friend’s place in Singapore cause we don’t have a car and it’s hard to get public transportation at midnight, so we tapao damn lot of food before heading back to the house.
Can’t finish the food now? Tapao and finish it later! :p
